Sangre I: Acer macrophyllum
Sangre I: Acer macrophyllum is part of my Sangre series. Sangre refers to blood, and often the blood of Christ (as in Sangre de Christo). The jagged, sheer Sangre de Christo mountain range in Colorado is an inspiration for the forms in this series, which relfect the charcter of that rugged yet elegant spine of rock. This series title also references the life force that runs through us and through all life.
Sangre I: Acer macrophyllum is sculpted from a burl from an ancient Western Big Leaf Maple (latin name Acer macrophyllum) that fell down in a storm in 2007. I was invited to come harvest some of the wood from that great old tree. It has a rounded, smooth, deep basin, and sheer sides with sharp edges that meet at crisp corner peaks. It has a rounded bottom, so that the piece rests on one point.
Sangre I: Acer macrophyllum measures 17" x 16" x 10" and is finished to a crystal, clear luster with polyurethane and carnauba wax.

Sangre II: Acer Macrophyllum
This is another piece from my Sangre series. It's ridges were so sharp when I was sculpting it that I sliced my palm open along one of its knife-edges (ouch!). So Sangre it is! After that, I shaped the edges so they're no't quite so dangerous.
This piece has sheer walls and a very deep basin. Its bottom is left in a semi-natural state, showing the outer circumference of the tree this piece came from (the same one that Sangre I above came from). This one is absolutely full of gorgeous burl character throughout.
It measures about 17" long x 11" wide x 14" tall. It has a rounded bottom so it rocks a bit, but because it is not totally rounded, it does not spin. It is finished to a crystal-clear luster with polyurethane and carnauba wax.

Sangre III: Acer macrophyllum burl
This is a gorgeous little piece, very simple, very beautiful. It features excellent maple burl character, including some natural edge burl "points" along one face. The points are the exterior of the burl, just under the bark of the tree. I picked and wire-brushed the bark away, leaving an uncanny landscape of burl points reminiscent of a desert badlands.
This piece measures about 11" long x 4" thick x 10" tall. It is finished to a crystal-clear luster with polyurethane and carnauba wax.

Sangre IV: Acer macrophyllum
This is a small version of Sangre I above, from the same tree. It features a natural edge bottom, with the bark having been removed, exposing the cambium layer. I like the interplay between natural formation and human formation in this piece for this reason. It's a good example of the tension between these two ways of shaping a form that I strive for in my work.
It measures about 11" long x 7" thick x 8" tall. It is finished to a crystal-clear luster with polyurethane and carnauba wax.
